  August 2008
  Cathy Van Bruggen Designs
  Hello Everyone,

July has been a very exciting month. The International Quilts Inc. show in Long Beach, CA turned out to be fabulous. My dauther, Kim, and granddaughter, Lisa, set up and worked the booth. A special thanks to Catherine, Lorraine, and Mary. They were a tremendous help in setting up and taking down the booth.

At right, is a picture of Lisa at the Long Beach show. Lisa's going to have a 16th birthday this month, and she's been such a help around here!

I was visiting Candlelite Quilts in Chelmsford, MA. The ladies who attended the workshop there we so wonderful! Then, I drove to Maine with my sister-in-law, Lucia, and taught at Maine Quilts 2008. The conference went so smoothly. I taught two classes and enjoyed every minute. Kim and I are so thankful for all of the continued support that we have from all of you.

Quiltin' Questions

Linda's Question : I'd like to take a Hawaiian appliqué project with me on vacation to Cancun in September. I was wondering what tools won't get confiscated at airport security. I would love to work on my appliqué under the palapa on the beach.

Cathy says: Linda, thank you for your question. The best solution to "in flight" scissors is an inexpensive pair of baby finger nail scissors. They have rounded tips but are sharp enough to clip fabric and thread. When I travel, I put the scissors and the spool of thread on a ribbon to wear around my neck. It's really hard to chase your thread on an airplane! Have a great vacation.

Stacy wrote: I am new to appliqué and enjoying it immensely. My question is about the stability of appliquing on a baby quilt. If it is an item that will be washed repeatedly is there something I should do to keep it firmly attached? Do you recommend any different and/or additional steps to keep it looking great?

Cathy says: Since baby's quilts are laundered often, you might consider machine appliqué. The fused pieces can be secured by using a zig-zag machine stitch, blanket stitch, or straight stitch around the raw edges. Match the thread to the appiqué piece or use a contrast thread for a decorative touch. A stablizer like "ewlite" needes to be pinned to the underside of the quilt before machine stitching. This will give you beautiful stitches. Remove the stabilizer before quilting.
